Monica Chavis, Student Intern

As a student therapist, I understand the courage it takes to begin your healing journey, and I count it an honor to walk alongside individuals, couples, and families in their pursuit of emotional wellness. My heart for this work is deeply rooted in my belief that people can heal, grow, and thrive when given a safe, supportive space to explore their stories.

My approach to therapy is relational, collaborative, and infused with faith, empathy, and curiosity. I strive to create an environment where clients feel seen, heard, and valued as they uncover what’s been holding them back and discover new paths forward. Whether you’re navigating anxiety, relationship challenges, life transitions, or emotional overwhelm, my goal is to hold space for your whole self; mind, body, and spirit.

I am currently pursuing a Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy at Colorado Christian University, where I’ve been trained in systemic, strength-based approaches to care. I bring a deep passion for supporting individuals and families as they work toward emotional clarity, relational healing, and lasting change. My lived experiences, academic journey, and ongoing clinical training have shaped a therapeutic lens that is trauma-informed, spiritually sensitive, and culturally aware.

My clinical interests include trauma recovery, emotional regulation, family dynamics, identity development, and the integration of spirituality in the therapeutic process. I am passionate about empowering clients to build healthy emotional toolkits and improve the quality of their relationships beginning with the one they have with themselves.

In therapy with me, you can expect warmth, structure, honesty, and a gentle nudge toward growth when you need it most. My hope is that you leave each session feeling more equipped and less alone.

“Healing begins with being heard, and transformation follows when we feel safe enough to be honest.”

Healing doesn’t have to happen on your own or in isolation, but through rebuilding healthy connections rooted in safety and trust.

As a therapist, I strive to create space for clients to feel safe and empowered and to show up authentically as themselves, as they are. Trauma most often disrupts our human capacity to connect and feel safe in connection to others, pushing many folks to isolation and hyperindividualism, while wondering if they are deserving of love and care. I hope to walk alongside you in the journey to rebuild your sense of safety and grounding in your self, and in connection with your loved ones, in ways that feel liberatory and healing.

How I show up in the therapeutic setting is largely shaped by my experiences facilitating support groups for queer Asian/Pacific Islander survivors of gender- and power-based violence. My therapeutic approach includes aspects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, Attachment-Based Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and aims to create a space that is client-centered, trauma-informed, and culturally sensitive. Options to also incorporate art and somatic work into our sessions in addition to talk therapy if desired.

I specialize in working with survivors, adolescents, and adults navigating anxiety, depression, ADHD and neurodivergence, LGBTQIA+ identity, life transitions and experiences with immigration, relationship and family difficulties, grief, and healing from intergenerational, interpersonal, and systemic trauma.

Part of the human experience means we are not protected from facing times that are difficult and painful. These hard to deal with emotions are ones that I like to approach with curiosity as they attempt to communicate something important or simply that something does not feel right. I recognize that these messages contribute to the story that we tell ourselves, they signal to what is getting in the way, and offer critical insight into what we would like to be different. I believe that each person is the expert in their own lives, and that a collaborative therapeutic relationship can sometimes help during times when things feels stuck.

I am a Licensed Graduate Marriage and Family Therapist. I received my Bachelors degree in Psychology from California State University Fullerton, a Masters degree in Human Service Counseling with an emphasis in Military Resilience from Liberty University, and lastly a Masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Capella University. I am a military spouse, and originally from Southern California, but the military has taken our family to various parts of the U.S. stretching from coast to coast. I began my professional experience working as a behavior therapist where I worked closely with families who have children diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum. It was through that role that I discovered my interest for working with and the critical importance of relationships.

I am passionate about being a relational therapist and exploring the relationships that we find ourselves a part of. I recognize how our relationships are an aspect of our lives that can influence us to be the people that we are today. It is my belief that the quality of our lives is linked to the quality of our relationships with ourselves and others. Additionally, I have a deep understanding of how strengths can serve as an agent for change. I am dedicated to help those that I work with to identify those strengths in a way that can help with achieving growth and overcoming challenges or adversity. In my approach you can expect a therapeutic environment that is authentic, nonjudgmental, and filled with empathy and compassion as you lean into the discomfort that naturally comes with discovery and growth.

I also acknowledge that it takes courage to share your story, and am honored and committed to meeting you where you are with the invitation of walking with you on your journey.

Let’s explore what brought you here, and let’s work together to shape where your life is going.

I’m a counselor who is focused on helping people cultivate fuller lives while living with anxiety, depression, and chronic conditions. My approach to therapy balances being person-centered with the use of research-supported interventions for managing specific problems (e.g., cognitive-behavioral therapy for depression). I help people by reviewing patterns in their daily life with them and identifying opportunities to make a change. With this approach, clients create new habits that increase their engagement with daily life and rewarding activities.

My graduate training centered around the relationships between what people think, what they do, and how they feel; these relationships make up the theory behind cognitive-behavioral therapies. While they are important, I work to see the whole person who comes to the session. So many things contribute to where you are, including things like your relationships, your experiences, your strengths, your interests.

I want to help you feel seen and understood, help you develop a richer understanding of the situations that brought you to my virtual office, and work collaboratively with you from start to finish. Together, let’s embrace who you are, make sense of what brought you here, make space for who you want to be, and determine how best to get there.
